Sixth Form Application 2024-26

Application for Entry to Sixth Form

Your choices:

  • You are required to study 3 A-level subjects or equivalent.
  • Study the guidance information overleaf. Please indicate below the subjects you would like to study in order of preference. In the case of a subject being oversubscribed, we will allocate places based on order of preference.
  • If you are choosing Further Mathematics this may be a 4th A-level depending on your overall GCSE Average Point Score (APS). Core mathematics is in addition to your A level choices and is not taken with A level mathematics.
  • As with your GCSE options, we will aim to construct a timetable that accommodates all students, choices.  If clashes occur, they will be discussed with applicants on an individual basis and accommodate you via the consortium.
  • If you have not gained GCSE grade 4 or above in English or mathematics you will be required to retake the examination.

NB: Courses will only run if there are enough students to make them viable.


 

Curriculum Entry Requirements - A Levels 2024 

Please refer to the individual subject requirements for entry requirement grades to study A Level and BTEC qualifications here in addition to the following criteria: 

Minimum academic entry requirements:

Pathway

40+ GCSE points including a minimum of a grade 5 in English and mathematics.

3 A-Level qualifications  

34+ GCSE points including a minimum of a grade 5 in English and mathematics.

Vocational blend of BTEC and A-Level courses

34+ GCSE points including a minimum of a grade 5 in English and mathematics.                                          

Vocational courses

The above is calculated as follows, from a student’s best 8 GCSE results:

Grade 9 = 9 points, Grade 8 = 8 points, Grade 7 = 7 points, Grade 6 = 6 points, Grade 5 = 5 points, etc 

BTEC (Level 2): D* = 8 points, D = 7 points, M = 5.5 points, P = 4 points.

 

Applications for the Music Academy

In addition to the academic criteria, you will have to undergo an audition and the following entrance criteria will be applied: 

 

Musical ability:

  • A good standard on your main instrument (Grade 5+ or equivalent)

Ensemble awareness:

  • Experience and awareness of playing or singing in an ensemble, either through KS4 music or extracurricular activities

Musical knowledge:

  • Show a good understanding of different styles of music relevant to your main instrumental/vocal study

Leadership:

  • Where applicable, experience of leading musical groups or events and a willingness to take on leadership roles within the music department

Decision making: during your audition, we will be looking for the following attributes:

  • A good level of technical ability on your chosen instrument (including vocals)
  • A good level of musicianship
  • Awareness of stylistic conventions for your chosen genre
  • Experience of playing/singing in ensembles or small groups
  • Any previous leadership experience and a willingness to take on leadership roles within the music department

 

 

Applications for any of the Sports Academies

 In addition to the academic criteria, the following sporting entrance criteria is applied: 

 

Sports Standards:

  • You currently performed to at least district level in your chosen sport. 

Range of Skills:

  • You are able to demonstrate all core skills and nearly advanced skills for the activity in isolation and under competitive pressure in authentic performance situations. 

Quality of skills:

  • Core skills are performed consistently with an excellent standard of accuracy, control and fluency
  • The advanced skills demonstrated are performed consistently with an excellent standard of accuracy, control and fluency. 

Physical attributes:

  • You are able to demonstrate appropriate levels of physical fitness and psychological control to perform very effectively nearly all of the time. 

Decision making: during your trial, we will be looking for the following skills and attributes:

  • Successfully selects and uses appropriate skills on nearly all occasions
  • Applies appropriate team strategies/tactics/compositional ideas demonstrating an excellent understanding of the activity
  • Demonstrates excellent awareness of the rules/regulations of the activity during performance
  • Demonstrates excellent regard for the safety of themselves and others
  • Demonstrates excellent awareness of and response to the strengths, weaknesses and actions of other player(s)/performer(s) is excellent
